Writers who wear suits will not always be more successful, but they will always be better dressed than the average man. The question you have to ask, however, is whether that look will improve your image as an artist and writer. In many cases it will, but in some cases it will only serve to tarnish that image by branding you as a businessperson and not as an artist.
Let's take the example of Tom Wolfe. He wears a suit most of the time when he's appearing on television or giving a speech, and his suit is almost always white. His approach is to use a business suit but to choose a color that will make him stand out from the crowd. In this way, Wolfe is able to look good but also be unique.
If you can achieve this unique look, then you would be more successful if you could define yourself with a new look in suits. Examples might be black suits, or suits with a certain unusual cut or design. In this way you could define yourself and improve your image as a writer.
CASUAL
Casual outfits can help an artist look more relaxed. Take Yukio Mishima, for instance. He wore suits a lot of the time but he also wore black t-shirts and other casual attire sometimes. This casual look was helpful in defining him as an artist.
In fact, Mishima was accused of looking too much like a banker. But when he started wearing t-shirts, his image as an artist improved. The take home message from Mishima is that you can also wear casual outfits if you're an artist; you certainly don't have to be formal all the time.
HATS
Some writers try to define their look with an accessory like a hat. Take the example of Truman Capote. He is probably one of the most famous examples of an artist using a hat to define his image.
The only problem with Capote was that his choice made him look silly and people made fun of him for his hat. Sometimes he would wear a wide-brimmed hat that looked like a cowboy hat. On his short frame it looked rather funny. So when you choose a hat, make sure that it is one which will not make you the laughingstock that you do not want to become.
By selecting appropriately unique suits and casual attire you can improve your artistic image, and by avoiding hats that are too silly you can boost your image even more.
